Popular Australian soap operas Neighbours and Home and Away have produced a number of stars to cross the Pacific Ocean and find success in Hollywood movies.
Some, such as Thor actor Chris Hemsworth had blink-and-you’ll-miss-them roles but others including Margot Robbie, Isla Fisher, Melissa George and Guy Pearce enjoyed multi-year contracts and appeared in hundreds of episodes between them.

There are a number of household names in Hollywood who got their acting break on Australian soap operas Neighbours and Home & Away. Some of them you’ll be surprised about. For instance, Russell Crowe was in four Neighbours episodes in 1987 while Chris Hemsworth aka Thor was in a single episode in 2002.

But others became very familiar pieces of the “furniture”. Isla Fisher, who has since starred in Wedding Crashers, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Now You See Me, played Shannon Reed in Home and Away for three years in the mid 1990s while Guy Pearce, perhaps best known for Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Curtis Hanson’s L.A. Confidential, appeared in 496 episodes of Neighbours and 12 episodes of Home & Away before making the Hollywood leap.

Russell Crowe in Neighbours.
And while Russell Crowe’s appearance in Neighbours was brief (playing the dodgy ex-con Kenny Larkin in four episodes), that was nothing compared to Chris Hemsworth who got a single episode in 2002. His brother Liam Hemsworth got a little more screen time as he played Bridget Parker’s paraplegic friend Josh between 2007 and 2008.

Frequently Asked Questions: From Soap Stars to Hollywood Icons
Which actors started on Neighbours or Home and Away?

Many of Hollywood’s biggest names began their careers on Australian soaps. Margot Robbie (Donna Freedman) and Guy Pearce (Mike Young) are among the most famous Neighbours alumni. Meanwhile, Home and Away served as a launchpad for Chris Hemsworth (Kim Hyde), Isla Fisher (Shannon Reed), and Heath Ledger (Scott Irwin). Even A-listers like Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts had brief but memorable guest stints early in their careers.
Why do so many Australian soap stars become successful in Hollywood?
The gruelling production schedule of Australian soaps is often cited as the ultimate acting boot camp. Actors frequently film up to five episodes a week, requiring them to memorise vast amounts of dialogue and hit their marks with precision under tight deadlines. This high-pressure environment builds a level of professional discipline and technical set-smarts that makes them highly adaptable when they move to major US film productions.
Who is the most successful actor to come from an Australian soap?

While success is subjective, Margot Robbie is currently one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, both as a multi-Oscar-nominated actress and a high-profile producer (Barbie). However, Chris Hemsworth is a global box-office titan thanks to his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce have maintained prestigious, award-winning careers for decades.

Neighbours isn’t being made anymore but Home and Away has also produced stars Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, Scream VI). Elsewhere, Jacob Elordi (Wuthering Heights, Saltburn) has become one of the industry’s most sought-after leading men. While he never appeared in an Australian soap opera, he did audition for roles in both Neighbours and Home and Away.
